Baseball America lists 5 Chicago Cubs' prospects on their dynasty top 100
Over the past few weeks, several baseball sites have released their prospects lists, and this time It's Baseball America dropping their dynasty top 100 prospects. BA certainly gives more love to Cubs prospects, naming five in total from the organization to the top 100. As the 2023 campaign breaks out, there will likely be a couple more names added to these lists, as we've seen several sites mention the Cubs, with several just outside of that top 100 just narrowly missing the cut. Let's dive right in on who Baseball America likes from the Cubs organization.
BA Top 100 - 97. Brennen Davis
Good to see Brennen Davis still on a top 100 list here. Though he has dealt with back issues this past year, the ceiling is still high for the former #1 Cubs prospect if he can stay healthy. It was only in 2021 that Davis was promoted to Triple-A Iowa, recording a .268/.397/.536 with a 150 wRC+ and .268 ISO, albeit in a small sample size of 56 ABs. Given his potential five-tool ability, he still rates out as a 55 FV player, according to Fangraphs. It is way too early to even consider closing the book on Davis here. Although, 2023 will be a vital year for him in terms of production and health.
BA Top 100 - 83. Kevin Alcantara
Another popular name that has graced multiple top 100 lists this winter is Kevin Alcantara. At Myrtle Beach with the Pelicans, Alcantara notched a line of .273/.360/.451 with 15 HRs and 85 driven in to go along with a 124 wRC+. Fielding-wise, between time spent in CF and RF, he recorded a .0964 FPCT. Alcantara had a solid season with the bat, but his numbers were down from the Complex League between the Yankees and Cubs post-trade a year prior when he slashed .345/.423/.588 in 119 ABs. Of course, adjusting to high levels of pitching is a real thing. Hopefully, the 20-year-old outfielder will continue to do just that and keep moving up the list of Cub's top prospects.
BA Top 100 - 74. Alexander Canario
After suffering terrible injuries to his ankle and shoulder in the Dominican Winter League, It's good to still see high praise for Alexander Canario. Between three levels, Canario recorded a line of .252/.343/.556 with 37 HRs and 97 RBIs. On top of that, defensively, he accumulated 212 total putouts between LF, CF, and RF, along with eleven assists and five errors, good for a 0.978 FPCT. Canario will miss the better part of 2023, but at 22 years old, he still has a very high ceiling.
BA Top 100 - 56. Matt Mervis
Nice to see Matt Mervis crack a top 100 list after the stellar season he put together between three different levels last season. Although the signings of both Eric Hosmer and Trey Mancini could delay the inevitable debut of the Cubs' future first baseman, there is nothing wrong with him further honing his skills until he is ready to go in the MLB. In 2022, he slashed a combined .309/.379/.606 with 36 HRs and 119 RBIs. His .297 ISO and 152 wRC+ at Triple-A give him all the potential to succeed at the highest level.
BA Top 100 - 31. Pete Crow-Armstrong
Per usual, Pete Crow-Armstrong tops the list, finding himself as a member of the top 100 and the number one prospect in the Cubs organization. The Future center fielder will likely spend time between Double-A Tennessee and (hopefully) Triple-A Iowa. Between A ball and High-A South Bend, PCA slashed .312/.376/.520 with 16 HR and 61 RBIs. He also recorded 32 stolen bases on the year and a .97 fielding percentage between both levels. Should he keep on his current trajectory, he will soon be contributing to the Cubs at the major league level.
