Another opportunity for Chicago Cubs’ prospect Matt Mervis to shine
The Chicago Cubs’ 24-year-old first base prospect, Matt Mervis has been having a sensational past year. He has turned heads every time he has stepped foot on any baseball diamond. It didn't matter if it was during the regular minor league season or during the Arizona Fall League.
He started the 2022 campaign with the High-A South Bend Cubs. After only 27 games (hitting a .350/.389/.650 slash line with 7 home runs) he was quickly promoted to the Tennessee Smokies (Double-A team). He would continue to tear it up by adding another 14 home runs in 53 games before hitting 15 more with the Iowa Cubs in Triple-A.
Overall, Mervis put up monster statistics with a slash line of .309/.379/.606 with 36 home runs, 119 runs batted in, and 310 total bases. This performance helped him get invited to play in the Arizona Fall League. Once again, he didn’t disappoint by tying the league with six home runs and being named one of the 2022 AFL All-Stars while competing in their home run derby challenge.
Everyone has noticed the 6’4 225lbs left-handed power-hitting slugger. According to Jon Morosi, the Cubs Minor League Player of the Year was just listed on Israel’s World Baseball Classic team.
This will give the Cubs’ number 21 prospect another opportunity to prove himself before spring training. The Cubs may plan on bringing up the star nicknamed “Mash” to the big-league ball club at the start of the new season. He will most likely get some playing time behind newly acquired first baseman Eric Hosmer and Designated Hitter Patrick Wisdom.
No matter what happens, Matt Mervis has had an incredible stretch for the past 12 months. He will get a great opportunity on a world stage to face tough Major League talented pitchers. He has earned this chance to show what he’s got in the hopes of starting the season on the Chicago Cubs roster.
