When Christopher Morel made his Major League debut with the Chicago Cubs in May of the 2022 season, it took very little time for him to become the favorite of many Cubs fans across the nation.
Between his energy on the field and electric home run power, Morel was single-handedly the player who sparked interest in a Cubs' team that was in the first full season of a rebuild.
Morel clubbed 16 home runs in 429 plate appearances during his rookie season, leaving many fans to wonder what his season would have looked like had he been at the Major League level since Opening Day.
It was an answer that fans were expecting to have last season as many viewed Morel's inclusion on the Opening Day roster as a certainty. Citing his offensive struggles during the second half of the 2022 season, the Cubs optioned Morel to Triple-A at the start of the 2023 season. 11 home runs in 29 games later, Morel quickly returned to the Major League level where he had 26 home runs in 429 plate appearances.
Again, fans were left with the question of what Morel's season would have looked like had he spent the entire season at the Major League level.
With Morel opening the 2024 season as the Cubs' starting third baseman, Opening Day 2024 marks the first time in his career that he has been a member of the Opening Day roster.
All eyes will be on Christopher Morel as the Cubs' third baseman.
Assuming Morel continues to have an offensive profile that is capable of hitting 30 home runs in a season, his ability to field at third base will be the important question that needs to be answered this season. If Morel proves he is capable of handling third base, the team may not have to worry about the position until 2029.
