It's been a struggle to start the season for Chicago Cubs reliever Yency Almonte after he was acquired by the team in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason.

The latest example of that was the Cubs' victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. The Cubs were well on their way to cruising to a blowout victory before the bullpen struggled. Almonte was among the relievers that had a hard time getting outs on Wednesday as he allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while only being able to record one out.

Almonte has allowed four runs on five this and three walks in four appearances this season. As the bullpen often sees early-season movement, it goes without saying that Almonte is already making the case to be the first reliever demoted to Triple-A Iowa.

There is an interesting wrinkle in regard to Almonte's contract situation. Cubs' prospect insider, Arizona Phil, shared the following note.

Yency Almonte may be the first reliever to be demoted out of the Chicago Cubs' bullpen.

It goes without saying that roster decisions are coming for the Cubs in the coming weeks with Jameson Taillon set to return in a couple of weeks and Justin Steele at the beginning of May. Given the early impressions that Luke Little has made and the idea that the Cubs may keep Ben Brown in the hybrid role that he is currently in, Almonte figures to be the corresponding move once the veteran starting pitchers return.

If the Cubs are pinching pennies, which can never be counted out for a team owned by Tom Ricketts, the decision would need to arrive by April 26. It would seem that Almonte will be given another opportunity or two before then but if the struggles continue, his time with the Cubs may not be long.
