5 Chicago Cubs prospects that could be promoted soon - 3. Matt Mervis

Perhaps, the heir to Anthony Rizzo's throne, Matt Mervis, is again forcing the front office's hand. With every good game that Mervis has at Triple-A and every time Eric Hosmer grounds out, the reality is becoming increasingly likely that we will see Mervis in a Cubs uniform before long. It's been well-documented that Hosmer is no stranger to hot starts throughout his career, and as he looks to begin fizzling out, the future Cubs slugger is only one call away.

Mervis is already slashing .288/.410/.576 with five home runs and 21 RBIs. Leaving production like this in the minor levels that somebody of the same position isn't matching only hinders your entire production as a team. Of course, once Mervis gets to the show, there will be an adjustment period. The fact remains, however, that there's no better time than now to let him figure it out. The Cubs have opted not to put too much pressure on Mervis, but the truth is that there is always pressure on a rookie to perform.

The longer they wait to promote him, the pressure will only increase the more and more competitive the Cubs get. The Cubs are looking to be a winning team as soon as this year, so it makes sense to get Mervis as well-polished as possible at the highest level before the Cubs are ready to go all in for a serious run.
