3. Adbert Alzolay

The former Chicago Cubs' 2018 top prospect, Adbert Alzolay has slowly developed. However, Alzolay made the 2023 opening-day roster as a reliever, not a starter. in 2022, Alzolay appeared in just 6 games, all out of the pen. A closer is someone who needs to be consistent, not just through performance, but by being healthy. Alzolay has struggled with injuries since being called up to the majors in 2019, as he has appeared in just 45 games.

4. Brandon Hughes

Brandon Hughes may have been the surprise rookie call-up last season and was lights out for a disappointing season. Hughes appeared in 57 games in 2022, finishing with 8 saves, a 3.12 ERA, and a 1.092 WHIP. However, the 27-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list right before opening day. Maybe at some point, Hughes will be the closer when he is back.

The Cubs have a solid starting rotation mixed with a below average bullpen, something that is not ideal for a team wanting to compete. Manager David Ross needs to find out who the closer for the team is, and even though it is still early, the closer should be determined within the month, allowing for that person to solely focus on that position.
