The Chicago Cubs received some encouraging news over the weekend as manager David Ross told reporters that starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks will be starting a minor-league rehab assignment later this week.

Hendricks last pitched in a professional game last July so the expectation is that he will have an extended minor-league rehab assignment. Based on the current timeline, it would seem likely that Hendricks could be ready to return to the Major League team by mid-May.

Once Hendricks is ready to return, the Cubs will have a decision to make in regard to their pitching staff. Hendricks will undoubtedly be slotted into the rotation upon his return and therefore, the team will need to determine the corresponding moves.

3 Chicago Cubs players that could be optioned once Kyle Hendricks returns - Hayden Wesneski

It has been a struggle for Hayden Wesneski to begin the 2023 season. Outside of his start against the Four-A team that is known as the Oakland Athletics last week, Wesneski has looked unsettled at best this season. Wesneski has allowed 14 runs (12 earned) in 17.1 innings pitched this season while allowing 4 home runs.

The concern with Wesneski's start to the season is that he is not missing bats. Wesneski is averaging less than six strikeouts per nine innings pitched through his first four starts this season and that is the lowest mark of his professional career. Wesneski also is suffering from command issues as he is averaging just over three walks per nine innings pitched.

A return to Triple-A Iowa may be in the cards for Wesneski once Hendricks returns.

3 Chicago Cubs players that could be optioned once Kyle Hendricks returns - Julian Merryweather

It has been a rough start to the season for right-handed relief pitcher Julian Merryweather. Merryweather and his lively fastball had an impressive showing during Spring Training for the Cubs but that has not translated over to the regular season. Merryweather has allowed 8 runs through 8.1 innings pitched this season.

Once Hendricks is ready to return to the Major League team, Merryweather could be the first arm that is optioned. Under this scenario, Hendricks would slide in at the bottom of the rotation while the Cubs move Hayden Wesneski to a swing role out of the bullpen. The move could allow for Cubs manager David Ross to be strategic when he deploys Wesneski in an effort to get the rookie pitcher back on track.

3 Chicago Cubs players that could be optioned once Kyle Hendricks returns - Michael Fulmer

The Michael Fulmer experiment is off to a rough start to the season. Fulmer's struggles continued on Sunday as he allowed another two runs in his outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After the game, David Ross did issue a semi-vote of confidence in Fulmer while speaking with reporters.

“I trust Michael Fulmer,” Ross said. “I’ll make that statement, for sure. When you feel like you’re not at your best and you care a lot — and Michael Fulmer cares a whole lot about this team and performing for this organization — you may try a little bit harder. And I don’t know that trying harder in our game is the best formula for success. “It’s just getting back to making sure he has a plan to execute what he’s good at and continuing to look at the information and see if we can fine-tune some things. That’s the only problem solving that we’re trying to do right now. I don’t think I don’t trust Michael Fulmer at the back end of games.”

No, Fulmer is not a true candidate to be optioned to Triple-A Iowa once Kyle Hendricks is healthy. Having said that, if Fulmer is unable to find his form in the coming weeks, it seems likely that an IL trip may be in his future. Fulmer being placed on the IL could be the corresponding move once Hendricks is ready to return and would allow the team to kick any more meaningful decisions down the return.
