3 Chicago Cubs players that could be optioned once Kyle Hendricks returns - Michael Fulmer

The Michael Fulmer experiment is off to a rough start to the season. Fulmer's struggles continued on Sunday as he allowed another two runs in his outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After the game, David Ross did issue a semi-vote of confidence in Fulmer while speaking with reporters.

"“I trust Michael Fulmer,” Ross said. “I’ll make that statement, for sure. When you feel like you’re not at your best and you care a lot — and Michael Fulmer cares a whole lot about this team and performing for this organization — you may try a little bit harder. And I don’t know that trying harder in our game is the best formula for success. “It’s just getting back to making sure he has a plan to execute what he’s good at and continuing to look at the information and see if we can fine-tune some things. That’s the only problem solving that we’re trying to do right now. I don’t think I don’t trust Michael Fulmer at the back end of games.”"

No, Fulmer is not a true candidate to be optioned to Triple-A Iowa once Kyle Hendricks is healthy. Having said that, if Fulmer is unable to find his form in the coming weeks, it seems likely that an IL trip may be in his future. Fulmer being placed on the IL could be the corresponding move once Hendricks is ready to return and would allow the team to kick any more meaningful decisions down the return.
