The Chicago Cubs received some encouraging news over the weekend as manager David Ross told reporters that starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks will be starting a minor-league rehab assignment later this week.

Hendricks last pitched in a professional game last July so the expectation is that he will have an extended minor-league rehab assignment. Based on the current timeline, it would seem likely that Hendricks could be ready to return to the Major League team by mid-May.

Once Hendricks is ready to return, the Cubs will have a decision to make in regard to their pitching staff. Hendricks will undoubtedly be slotted into the rotation upon his return and therefore, the team will need to determine the corresponding moves.

3 Chicago Cubs players that could be optioned once Kyle Hendricks returns - Hayden Wesneski

It has been a struggle for Hayden Wesneski to begin the 2023 season. Outside of his start against the Four-A team that is known as the Oakland Athletics last week, Wesneski has looked unsettled at best this season. Wesneski has allowed 14 runs (12 earned) in 17.1 innings pitched this season while allowing 4 home runs.

The concern with Wesneski's start to the season is that he is not missing bats. Wesneski is averaging less than six strikeouts per nine innings pitched through his first four starts this season and that is the lowest mark of his professional career. Wesneski also is suffering from command issues as he is averaging just over three walks per nine innings pitched.

A return to Triple-A Iowa may be in the cards for Wesneski once Hendricks returns.
