The Chicago Cubs selected Florida State third baseman Cam Smith in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft as they followed a similar blueprint they laid last year when they selected Matt Shaw. Like Shaw, Smith's offensive profile had him rated as one of the best college bats in his draft class.

While Smith's impact on the Major League level likely will not be felt for a few more seasons, his selection could influence the Cubs' decision at the 2024 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline.

By all accounts, the Cubs are going to shift their attention from the draft to the deadline this week and it would seem that the team may be leaning toward being buyers. Despite entering the month with the outlook of a seller, the Cubs' 5-2 road trip prior to the All-Star break has them back in the discussion for one of the National League Wild Card spots.

Cam Smith may make it easier for the Cubs to move a top prospect.

While Smith is a third baseman by trade, some have projected a move to one of the corner outfield spots by the time he reaches the Major League level. However, Smith remaining at third base also hasn't been ruled out.

Smith's arrival to the organization could add to the speculation that infield prospect James Triantos may be the prospect that is on the move at the deadline. Between Triantos, Smith, and Shaw, the Cubs may be running out of positions to project at the Major League level for their top prospects. While moving Nico Hoerner may also be what creates a long-term opening, if the Cubs are going to be buying at the deadline, it would seem more likely that Triantos would be involved in a deadline deal.
