After dropping the first two games of their series against the Minnesota Twins, the Chicago Cubs entered Thursday with the hope of getting their offense back on track. As has been the case throughout the season, the Cubs turned to Pete Crow-Armstrong to provide some much-needed fireworks during the game.

Crow-Armstrong's power display started in the third inning of the game, when his two-run home run gave the Cubs an early 3-0 lead in the game.

Named a starter for the National League in the All-Star game next week, Crow-Armstrong had been scuffling of late. In comments recently shared with Matthew Trueblood of North Side Baseball, Crow-Armstrong confirmed that he and the team identified the issue and were working on getting his mechanics back in check.

"I can still be moving on time, but I’d end up backing the ball up a lot," Crow-Armstrong mentioned. "The goal is to always hit behind the front side, and if you’re overstriding, then you’ve gotta really fight to get through there. So you were seeing a lot of deep-caught, jammed ground balls. Not working under my front side."

The work seems to be paying off as the home run Crow-Armstrong had in the third inning of Thursday's game wasn't his only long ball. Backed with a 6-1 lead in the 7th inning, Crow-Armstrong added another home run for good measure.

With his power showcase on Thursday, Crow-Armstrong now has 25 home runs on the season and 27 stolen bases. Accomplishing that milestone before the All-Star break, Crow-Armstrong is in rare company in terms of MLB history.

Bobby Bonds finished the 1973 season with 39 home runs and 43 stolen bases. Meanwhile, Eric Davis finished the 1987 season with 37 home runs and 50 stolen bases.

Crow-Armstrong reaching 30-30 status feels like a foregone conclusion, but the real question would be if Crow-Armstrong can reach the 40-40 status before the end of the season. One thing is certain: if Crow-Armstrong does reach that milestone, he wouldn't just be an MVP candidate, he would be one of the favorites.
