The Chicago Cubs are no longer just dealing with a breakout season from Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Cubs are dealing with Crow-Armstrong making a strong case to the Most Valuable Player in the National League.

Crow-Armstrong's latest heroics came on Friday night during the Cubs' game against the Cincinnati Reds. It was a game that saw the Cubs trailing 6-2 before the offense did what they have already done multiple times this season in proving that no deficit is too large for them to overcome.

Completing the comeback, Crow-Armstrong hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to give the Cubs an 8-6 lead.

Pete Crow-Armstrong's breakout season just reached a whole new level

Entering play on Friday night, Crow-Armstrong had a slash line of .279/.313/.553/139wRC+ with 12 home runs. Given Crow-Armstrong's speed and defense, he was already going to likely end the season in the 4-WAR category. Given that his offensive breakout is proving to be more sustainable with each passing day, we're not just talking about Crow-Armstrong reaching 5-WAR status, could be well on his way to being a 6-WAR play by the end of the season. Crow-Armstrong's fWAR currently sits at 2.9, which is the top spot in the National League and second only to Aaron Judge in all of Major League Baseball.

Oh, and message to Jed Hoyer, yesterday's price is not today's price. Hoyer and the Cubs remain hopeful that they will be able to reach an extension with Crow-Armstrong before he reaches free agency in 2030. Crow-Armstrong's breakout continues to break the projections.

At this point, if Crow-Armstrong continues this offensive output for the remainder of the season, a likely contract comp is the Bobby Witt Jr. extension with the Kansas City Royals. Witt signed an 11-year extension with the Royals worth $288.7MM. With options, the deal could reach a value of $377MM for 14 years. As crazy as it may have seemed at the start of the season, Crow-Armstrong is quickly approaching being in a similar stratosphere.
