All signs continue to point in the direction of the Chicago Cubs adding All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman in the very near future.
The Cubs not only have emerged as an interested suitor for Bregman but reports earlier this week had the team stepping up their offer in hopes of finalizing a deal. Baseball insiders continue to circle the Cubs as the team that will land Bregman.
While providing an update on Bregman's free agency on Wednesday, Jon Heyman not only listed the Cubs as the frontrunner for the veteran third baseman but predicted that is indeed where the former Houston Astros' infielder will land.
Jon Heyman believes at this moment the Cubs have the best shot at landing Alex Bregman.

Following suit, Matt Spiegel of 670 The Score mentioned that he has heard that the Cubs may be nearing the finish line on a deal with Bregman, while those among industry circles believe the North Side is where the All-Star will land.
Spiegs: “Alex Bregman doesn’t really have a lot of places to go … I think the Cubs have a real good shot here at Bregman.”

We also would be remised if we did not mention that noted Cubs fan, Lisa Dubbs, teased a signing of Bregman.
Can you say Bregman? #Cubs
— Lisa (@Lisa_L_Dubbs) February 5, 2025
Lisa isn't any ordinary Cubs fan. Last offseason, around this time, when the Cubs were working to push a Cody Bellinger signing across the finish line, Lisa broke the news first. Even ESPN's Jeff Passan acknowledged that Lisa was right.
There could be another domino to fall in the aftermath of the Cubs signing Bregman. There continues to be increased speculation that once the Cubs sign Bregman, if they do, the team will have a Nico Hoerner trade lined up. That could speak to the reason why a Bregman signing has not been reported yet.
If Bregman does indeed sign with the Cubs, it would represent a moment where Scott Boras was forced to come off his original asking price. Something Boras had to do with slugging first baseman Pete Alonson. Alonso returned to the Mets on a two-year deal worth $54MM.
In total, Pete Alonso's deal will guarantee him $54 million over two years, sources tell ESPN.

After Alonso's signing with the Mets, all eyes are on Bregman as the Cubs hope to have a new third baseman by the time pitchers and catchers report on Sunday.
