Pete Alonso was an oft-rumored trade target connected to the Chicago Cubs in recent years, but with the emergence of Michael Busch in 2025, it seemed clear that Alonso wouldn't be on the Cubs' radar this offseason. On the final day of the Winter Meetings, Alonso has found a new home, inking a five-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles worth $155 million.
While the Cubs were not involved in the bidding for Alonso, his signing could have an impact on their offseason pursuits.
Like the Cubs, the Orioles have a need for a top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher and have been connected to a potential trade for Miami Marlins' starting pitcher Edward Cabrera. Beyond the impact Alonso will provide to Baltimore's starting lineup, his arrival could lead to the Orioles being willing to up their offer for Cabrera. Orioles infielder Coby Mayo could be an intriguing bat for the Marlins, considering they are looking for a first baseman.
The Cubs don't have the farm system to beat a potential trade offer from the Orioles for Cabrera, and that could see them pivot toward MacKenzie Gore of the Washington Nationals.
Pete Alonso's arrival in Baltimore could hurt the Cubs' chances for Alex Bregman.
Alonso's deal with the Orioles could also impact the Cubs' pursuit of Alex Bregman. During the opening days of the Winter Meetings, if it wasn't going to be the New York Mets, many thought Alonso would be signing with the Boston Red Sox. As it turns out, Boston's offer for Alonso was for fewer years and less money than what he signed for with the Orioles.

The Red Sox are still looking to add an impact bat this offseason. As of now, they remain the leader in the clubhouse for Bregman, and if anything, Alonso signing with a division rival may force them to get a deal done sooner as opposed to waiting out his market. A scenario that would force the Cubs to look elsewhere for potential offensive upgrades.
It's worth noting the Red Sox have been linked to several potential trades, including one for Arizona Diamondbacks' All-Star Ketel Marte. If the Cubs truly are hoping Bregman falls into their lap, they need to wish for that trade to come to fruition.
