New Pope has Cubs fans breaking social media in the most hilarious way possible

For the first time in history, the head of the Catholic Church is an American. Not only is he from the United States; he hails from Chicago - and is reportedly a Chicago Cubs fan, to boot.

Cardinal Robert Prevost will now be known as Pope Leo XIV, succeeding Pope Francis, who passed away last month at the age of 88. He was selected after a two-day conclave - the same amount of time it took for Popes Francis and Benedict XVI to be chosen, as well.

New Pope, Leo XIV, is reportedly a Chicago Cubs fan

We won't get into what this means for the world's 1.4 billion Catholics - but we will enjoy some of the best reactions from Chicagoans - and Cubs fans - on social media.

Yeah, Pete Crow-Armstrong has plenty of great nicknames, but we can't argue with Cespedes Family BBQ on this one: time to start the petition to anoint him 'White Smoke' moving forward. That might be one the sickest nicknames in the game if it actually stuck.

Does this mean we're getting an Obvious Shirts Pope x Cubs collection drop soon? Too soon to tell, but it's incredible regardless.

Real talk, though. If Pope Leo XIV is a Cubs fan, we need him to weigh in on the critical debates consuming the fandom: left field or right field bleachers? Is he pro-wave at Wrigley or anti-wave? What are his thoughts on the cup snakes on a Friday afternoon? (I kid, I kid - he has far more pressing matters that require his attention than the debauchery of Bleacher Bums at the Friendly Confines).

Still, a cool moment - and one that has (at least some) Cubs fans thinking: is a World Series this year now a slam-dunk for the North Siders?
