Once the All-Star break is over, that should bring an end to the wacky trade proposals that are being shared with the hope of creating engagement during a lull in trade rumors. The Chicago Cubs haven't been strangers to the outlandish trade proposals, but Jon Heyman had one for the New York Post that would likely place Jed Hoyer directly on the hot seat if he chose to make the deal.

The premise of the exercise was "one-stop shopping" for each contender. For the Cubs, with a need in the rotation, bullpen, and at third base, Heyman has the North Siders making a wild deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

MLB insider pitches a Cubs trade so bad Jed Hoyer might quit himself

The idea of the Cubs adding both Mitch Keller and David Bednar in a trade with the Pirates has been discussed before. It would be an expensive trade, one that would almost certainly include Owen Caissie, but where Heyman loses all credibility with his proposal, as the Cubs would also be swapping their third baseman, Matt Shaw, for the Pirates' third baseman, Ke'Bryan Hayes.

It's a lazy swap, and one you would come to expect from a national insider who may not be clued into the Cubs' third base situation. Shaw is an excellent defensive third baseman, but his offense isn't ready to face Major League pitching. In the long term, Shaw very much is the answer at third base. In looking for an upgrade at third base for THIS season, the Cubs are looking for someone who can be an immediate offensive upgrade. Hayes would not check that box for the Cubs, while also being under control through 2029.

Again, the Cubs are not trying to block Shaw at third base for the foreseeable future. For that reason, beyond Hayes' dwindling offensive production, there seems to be very little logic to the idea that the Cubs would be willing to swap Shaw for Hayes as part of this trade.

The good news is that once the All-Star break is over, there should be legitimate rumors to discuss, and these insane proposals can finally be put to bed.
