With the Men's College World Series just about over and the highly anticipated MLB Draft creeping ever closer, it's time to take a peek at who the Chicago Cubs might end up with when the smoke clears from the first round, and it's an intriguing name in 2025 Golden Spikes Award winner Wehiwa Aloy.
This is officially the time of year when all kinds of analysts offer up who they think the Cubs and everyone else in MLB will take when the draft does kick off. The latest MLB.com mock draft has Jed Hoyer and company going with someone likely still dealing with the pain of being eliminated from the CWS. But at least Aloy's days with Arkansas have taught him what playing for a winner is like.
Cubs connected to SEC slugger Wehiwa Aloy in MLB.com's latest first-round mock draft
The shortstop posted a rather incredible 2025 campaign, logging a slash line of .350/.434/.673 and bashing 21 home runs while driving in 68 runs. What might be more impressive is that the infielder had decent power before this season but took another step and could take another one should the Cubs decide he's the guy they need to have with the No. 22 pick in the first round.
The MLB scouting report indicates that their scouts are true believers in the SEC Player of the Year's pop, especially since he also showed it off in the Cape Cod League last summer. In just 21 games, he bashed eight homers while hitting .309 for the showcase season.
"Aloy's power is notable for a legitimate middle infielder as he has plus raw juice that plays to all fields but mostly to his pull side. His combination of bat speed and strength produces impressive exit velocities, and he's doing a better job of letting his pop come naturally as a junior."
The Chicago Cubs are set at shortstop for the short term with Dansby Swanson, but when a kid with Wehiwa Aloy's skillset falls into Hoyer's lap, he seems like a first-round pick.
It's been a mixed bag for the team in terms of first-round picks of late, but Hoyer has been on a hot stretch since 2022, selecting Cade Horton, Matt Shaw and Cam Smith over the last three years. Prior to that, the Cubs took Jordan Wicks out of Kansas State and the jury is still out on him and the team's 2020 first-round pick Ed Howard, looks like a major bust five years later.
