I know, it's not like there was anything else dominating headlines today. It's not like Chicago Cubs legend Sammy Sosa has been welcomed back into the fold or anything like that.
But in case you wanted another flavor of Cubs news today, we finally have confirmation on what number Kyle Tucker will wear next season. He'll keep the #30 he wore with Houston since 2020 - which means Chicago manager Craig Counsell will change numbers moving forward, as that was his uniform number last year.
Shortly after this tweet started making the rounds online Thursday afternoon, emails started going out from the team. One, in particular, came from Ivy Shop - and offered holiday delivery on Tucker jerseys, which would definitely make Cubs fans' day if they found one of these under the tree next week.
It wouldn't shock me at all to see Tucker's jersey on the top 10 list this time next year. Frankly, it's been that long since the Cubs had a star-caliber player like this to splurge on. The only detractor for many fans may be the likelihood he's a one-year rental - and will be off to greener pastures next offseason in free agency.
The last Cubs player to wear #30 was Edwin Rios in 2023. Prior to that Alec Mills donned the number from 2019-2022, wearing it for his no-hitter in Sept. 2020 in Milwaukee. Other notable #30s in recent Cubs history include Matt Clement and Ted Lilly. Ken Holtzman also wore the number in the 60s and 70s.
