Throughout the season, there have been doubts over how long the Chicago Cubs would continue the experiment with Justin Turner. From a production standpoint, Turner's arrival on the Cubs' bench hasn't gone exactly as the Cubs were hoping, but it's become clear that Turner has become the unsung leader in the team's clubhouse.
The latest moment was on display during the Cubs' 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon. The moment that has been most discussed from that victory is when Craig Counsell decided to pinch-hit for Matt Shaw in the seventh inning of a tied game. Owen Caissie took the plate appearance in place of Shaw and flew out.
On the surface, it seemed odd that Counsell would remove Shaw from the game. Shaw has been the Cubs' hottest hitter since the All-Star break and has continued his excellent defensive work at third base. Under the hood, Shaw has still struggled against right-handed pitchers who feature a sweeper, so it was a decision derived from data.
After Shaw was taken out of the game, the cameras of Marquee Sports Network panned toward the Cubs' dugout, and Turner was seen talking to Shaw. At first glance, it seemed like two teammates watching the game. However, as the cameras stayed on the rookie and veteran, it became clear that Turner was talking through what occurred with Shaw.

It's nothing that impacted the game in the moment, but it might be one of the most important clips to emerge from the Cubs' dugout this season.
At the center of the Cubs' success this season were Pete Crow-Armstrong's MVP-like performance during the first half and Shaw's breakout during the second half. Each of those players is in their first full season as a starter at the Major League level; there's bound to be emotions they haven't experienced before. That is why Turner remains on the roster, as he becomes that second voice for the coaching staff during games.
