During the lean years following the Chicago Cubs' World Series win, Sergio Alcantara was one of those young prospects that fans hoped would turn into something big. He had the combination of speed and power that was attractive, and he was certainly given every opportunity to grab a spot on the major league roster.
Unfortunately, things never quite worked out the way everyone hoped for Alcantara. In March of 2022, the Cubs DFA'd the infielder. He began a journey around the league, making stops with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, then the Padres, then back to the Diamondbacks, then back to the Cubs, then Arizona again, then the Pittsburgh Pirates, then the Diamondbacks once again (Arizona really liked Alcantara apparently), and then, last November, he landed with the San Francisco Giants.
This summer, very briefly, the former Chicago Cubs farmhand finally accomplished something he hadn't since 2022. Alcantara made it back to the majors. On July 4, he got what would be his only start for the Giants, as his stay in the big leagues was a short one.
Chicago Cubs alumnus Sergio Alcantara becomes free agent after brief Giants stint
Just a few days later, he was designated for assignment once again and chose to become a free agent, rather than return to the minor leagues. Once again, Sergio Alcantara is on the lookout for another organization, and while it doesn't appear he's an answer at the big league level for the Cubs, one has to wonder if there might be space in the club's minor league levels for someone who is now a veteran in navigating that sector of pro baseball.
The likely outcome is that he is close to ending his career, at least for a little while. It's not as though he was having a fantastic 2025 even in Triple-A. He slashed just .206/.319/.252/.571 in Sacramento, and it feels as though the Giants were doing him a favor by calling him up one last time before sending him on his way.
While the Chicago Cubs are not likely to show any real interest in Sergio Alcantara, the club will always have that two week period in 2021 when he was first called up where he exploded on the scene (.310 batting average, two home runs and three stolen bases) and offerd a quick glance at what could have been.
