Conflicting Reid Detmers trade reports injects chaos into Cubs' deadline plans

Even after the trade for Kevin Gausman on Sunday, the Chicago Cubs were hoping to land a controllable starting pitcher before Monday's trade deadline and they found the one they've been connected to for much of the past month. The Cubs have acquired controllable starting pitcher Reid Detmers from the Los Angeles Angels.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the Cubs' potential addition of Detmers. Bleacher Nation's Michael Cerami has reported the deal to be in place, but national insiders have pushed back. It's possible that a deal is approaching the final stages, but further verification is needed.

Detmers is in the middle of a breakout season with the Halos, and now serves a piece the Cubs will have in their rotation through the 2028 season. Through 22 starts this season, Detmers is carrying an ERA of 4.03, but that doesn't tell the true story of his success. He's striking out over 28% of the hitters he's facing this season, and walking under 8%. That leads to a FIP of 3.35.

Between the addition of Gausman and now Detmers added to the fold, the Cubs have certainly constructed a rotation capable of finding success in October.

One of the biggest questions of the deadline for the Cubs centered around the Angels. Detmers and Jose Soriano were clear fits for what the Cubs were looking to accomplish at the deadline, but it was unclear if LA would have a fire sal, considering interim status on general manager John Mozeliak. Mozeliak kicked his deadline activity off with a trade of Jose Soriano to the Toronto Blue Jays, leaving hope the Cubs could pry Detmers away from the Angels.

While Cerami has reported a deal to be in place, others have suggested one has yet to be finalized. Both ESPN's Jesse Rogers and MLB.com's Mark Feinsand have pushed back on trade, suggesting that the two teams are not close.

Further reportng is obviously needed, and as is always the case on the day of the deadline, things can change quickly. Detmers would be a clear fit for not only what the Cubs need this season, but what the need after the season.

Perhaps the two sides do iron out a deal before the deadline, but for now, more clarification is needed.

For what it's worth, multiple reports have confirmed the Cubs have acquired Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins. The impression is that the Cubs have pivoted away from Detmers, and settled on a trade for Garrett.
