The Chicago Cubs are preparing to be active at the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline later this month, and general manager Carter Hawkins confirmed on Monday morning that the team is already casting a wide net as they look to address their need for pitching. As has become the norm, Jed Hoyer met with reporters ahead of the first game of the Cubs' current homestand on Wednesday. In speaking with reporters, Hoyer admitted that there could be some creativity in the deals the Cubs make ahead of the deadline.

Along those lines, Hoyer also added that the Cubs will have the financial means to make any move they desire at the deadline.

"This team has played really well," Hoyer told reporters. "Let's wait 30 days and make that determination. ... Financially, I'm comfortable that we'll be able to address the needs we need to address at the deadline. That's not something I've questioned or thought about at all."

There is no other choice for the Cubs but to have the financial means to make any deal they desire ahead of the deadline. After all, the Cubs ended the offseason by saving nearly $30MM in trading Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees, and the team capped their offer to Alex Bregman despite identifying him as a player who can change the outlook of their season. The impression from the Cubs after each of those decisions was that the team would have financial flexibility at the deadline to make moves. That can can't be kicked further down the road. The deadline is here, and the Cubs need to be aggressive with no restrictions.

The deadline will be an important measuring stick for the Cubs' front office. As long as Kyle Tucker is only with the Cubs for the remainder of the 2025 season, this needs to be the year they go all-in. That could mean an uncomfortable amount of top prospects being moved at the deadline, but given their spending choices in recent years, it's the bed the team made for themselves.
