It sounds like Cubs fans can forget about a reunion with this familiar face

With another stopgap closer solution missing the mark on the North Side in Ryan Pressly, the Chicago Cubs will, once again, look to keep adding to the bullpen between now and the July 31 trade deadline.

Pressly's ineffectiveness in the ninth, paired with an ominous update on Porter Hodge's recent injury, has manager Craig Counsell pulling a rabbit out of his hat on a nightly basis as he looks to keep his team atop the NL Central with a seriously depleted pitching staff. One spot he won't find reinforcements, though, appears to be in former Cubs reliever David Robertson.

Robertson made sense as a Cubs free agent target all winter long. He still made sense in the spring and, guess what? Even when the regular season got underway, a short-term pact for the righty checked a lot of boxes for Chicago. However, a report from Bob Nightengale says the 40-year-old former All-Star “has no plans to sign with a team now unless he receives a strong offer.”

Well, given he didn't receive what he'd consider a 'strong offer' to this point, the writing is on the wall that Robertson might be at the end of the line. A 16-year MLB veteran, he's continued to defy Father Time, pitching to a 2.82 ERA since the start of the 2022 campaign - his age 37, 38 and 39 seasons. The same report suggests he was seeking a one-year deal in the $15 million range, which feels pretty reasonable, despite his age given how effective he's been in recent years.

Robertson started the 2022 season as a member of the Cubs and was brilliant in the first half, making 36 appearances and working to a 2.23 ERA. Jed Hoyer flipped him to the Philadelphia Phillies at the trade deadline, netting pitching prospect Ben Brown in the deal. For his part, Brown is still working to settle in at the big-league level, and could be in danger of losing his spot in the rotation when Shota Imanaga returns next month.
