The Chicago Cubs routed the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday but lost in the Cubs scoring 15 unanswered runs during the final 4 innings of the game was the fact that Seiya Suzuki was pulled from the game.
Miguel Amaya hit for Suzuki during the fifth inning of Saturday's game. While Suzuki has been know to suffer soft-tissue injuries, he was pulled from Saturday's game due to a wrist injury. After the game, Suzuki revealed that he had been playing through the injury since the Cub's victory over the Texas Rangers last Monday at Wrigley Field.
It seems that the discomfort feeling returned during Saturday's game, leading the Cubs to be cautious with their designated hitter.
Is Seiya Suzuki playing tonight?
While speaking with reporters after Saturday's victory, Cubs manager Craig Counsell labeled Suzuki as day-to-day. With the Cubs and Dodgers playing in ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball, Suzuki does, in theory, have extra time to get ready for the game but it would seem to be a safe bet that he will have the day off. While both of the Cubs' catchers have been offensive forces this season, don't expect the non-starting catcher to be the team's designated hitter on Sunday night. Justin Turner would seem to be a good call given that the Cubs are facing Tyler Glasnow.
The hope is that the wrist injury does not derail the hot start that Suzuki has had to the 2025 season. Through his first 77 plate appearances this season, Suzuki is slashing .292/.390/.538/163wRC+. In terms of players who have benefited the most from Kyle Tucker being in the Cubs' lineup, Suzuki would be at the top of the list.
While it seems likely that Suzuki will avoid a trip to the IL, it's a good time to remind everyone that Kevin Alcantara would likely be the first outfielder up from Triple-A Iowa in the event that there is an IL trip needed for one of the Cubs' Major League outfielders. Alcantara seems to be breaking out of his early-season slump in Triple-A, having multi-hit games on consecutive days. Owen Caissie also figures to make his Major League debut at some point this season, but likely not until there is a pathway to regular plate appearances.
