If the Chicago Cubs are in a position where they are sellers at the MLB trade deadline, it's inevitable that Ian Happ's name is going to come up. Happ is a free agent after the season, and rental bats often are easily attained at the deadline. Of course, it's a conversation that must start with the contract detail that can't be ignored.

As part of the three-year extension he signed with the Cubs previously, Happ has a full no-trade clause. In the past, Happ has expressed no desire to leave Chicago. His rationale made sense, considering the Cubs have been a contender for most of his career, and he filled an obvious need in left field.

Now, the conversation is layered. In the past, the Cubs likely weren't overly motivated to convince Happ to waive his no-trade clause. But if the goal for Jed Hoyer and Co. this summer is to replenish the farm system in what has proved to be a lost year, chances are there would be some eagerness to push Happ toward the idea of playing out the season with a contender.

It may not be that hard of a sell. Speaking with reporters before the season, Happ certainly made it sound like he had been thinking about what his playing career would look like after his time with the Cubs.

“It’s been a true honor for me to represent this great city, organization, and fan base. The reality of this is you can’t control if the team wants you back. It's totally plausible another chapter elsewhere awaits me.”

It needs to be stated, as long as the Cubs have even the faintest of chances of reaching the playoffs as a Wild Card team, it's hard to imagine a scenario where Hoyer completely tears down the major league roster at the deadline. Under that scenario, Happ likely plays out the season with the Cubs.

There's a clear reason why the Cubs may trade Ian Happ

But this is the same Cubs team that has lost 15 games over the past month. If that trend continues, the only option Hoyer will have at the deadline is to sell. As Hoyer has proven in the past, if he decides to sell, there are no half measures. Happ isn't anchored down to this roster beyond this season, and for that, he is an obvious trade chip.

It's a move that would also give the Cubs an early start are figuring out left field for the 2027 season, It would seem that Kevin Alcantara may have fallen out of favor with the organization, but a trade of Happ would create runway for Matt Shaw in the outfield to close out the season.

These aren't quite the scenarios the Cubs may have been preparing for at the start of the 2026 season, but after how they've looked over the past three weeks, it's a reality that is quickly approaching.
