The Chicago Cubs may have concerns with their pitching staff after the bullpen struggled during their four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend, but we all breathe a sigh of relief that the remedy will not be Lance Lynn.

While appearing on his wife's podcast, Lynn announced that he is retiring from Major League Baseball.

As spring training was nearing an end, a nightmare rumor surfaced that the Chicago Cubs were considering the addition of Lynn to their Major League pitching staff. Bob Nightengale of USA Today went as far as to say the Cubs had entered negotiations with Lynn on a one-year deal.

Shortly after Nightengale's report, local insiders seemed to suggest that he was overzealous in his reporting. While the Cubs had entertained the idea of adding Lynn, talks never reached a point where a deal was believed to be imminent.

Cubs fans no longer have to worry about the Lance Lynn rumor

Lynn's retirement announcement is only more confirmation that the Cubs likely were never serious during their talks with the veteran pitcher. Considering the struggles that Lynn has had over the last two seasons, the Cubs' interest in him never quite added up. The Cubs' rotation is set with Ben Brown as the team's fifth starter. Even if Javier Assad's oblique injury is more severe than originally believed, the Cubs have Colin Rea in the bullpen and Jordan Wicks in Triple-A as options to fill a spot in the rotation.

That doesn't mean that the Cubs won't have to address their starting rotation at the Major League Baseball trade deadline. The theme of the rotation has been inconsistency over the first week of the 2025 season. Justin Steele has struggled in his first two starts of the season while Jameson Taillon looked shaky in his start against the Diamondbacks. If the Cubs are in contention in July, it wouldn't be a surprise if they target a pitcher who can be added to the top of their rotation.
