When the offseason began, nine teams were seeking new managers. That number is down to one - and former Chicago Cubs skipper David Ross remains jobless.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres, Washington Nationals and Minnesota Twins have all made changes in the dugout. Just one team, the Colorado Rockies, still need to make a managerial hire, a move that could come soon after they lured Paul DePodesta away from the NFL to run their baseball ops department.

David Ross, Brandon Hyde coming up empty in their search for new jobs

According to a report from The Athletic (subscription required), Ross and former Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde have drawn 'little interest' despite their previous experience as managers. Both already possess an understanding of what the job entails at the big-league level. The same cannot be said of new Giants manager and former University of Tennessee coach Tony Vitello, new Angels manager Kurt Suzuki or Blake Butera or Craig Stammen, who will lead the Nationals and Padres, respectively.

Hyde interviewed with Washington before they ultimately hired Butera, but the former AL Manager of the Year remains unhired. Cubs fans may remember Hyde from his time as a coach under Rick Renteria and Joe Maddon. He filled a variety of roles during that time, most notably as the club's first base coach and then bench coach before joining the Orioles as their new manager in Dec. 2018.

He led the team through a painful rebuild in Baltimore, peaking with a 101-win 2023 campaign, but after winning just 91 games the following year and stumbling to a 15-28 mark this spring, the O's cut him loose in mid-May.

Ross reportedly drew interest as a bench coach candidate after being let go by the Cubs, but he wanted to manage again - prompting Aaron Boone and the Yankees to hire Brad Ausmus prior to the 2024 season. It's hard to imagine him not returning to the dugout at some point, either as a manager or coach, but, at least in the immediate aftermath of his firing by the Cubs, he's come up empty.
