Former Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Shelby Miller appears to have suffered a serious injury after exiting the Milwaukee Brewers' game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. Miller, a key trade deadline addition for the Brewers, was forced to leave the game after something clearly felt off during a pitch to Max Kepler in the eighth inning.

After the game, the update provided by Pat Murphy suggested that Miller could be missing some significant time.

“He said he heard something or he felt something pop in his elbow,” Murphy said after the game.

The Brewers' trade for Miller at the deadline was one of the more creative deals that were completed. Miller was on the IL at the time of the trade due to a forearm strain, and instead of giving up prospects, the Brewers absorbed all of the remaining money on the veteran relief pitcher's contract, earning $1MM, and also took on the injured Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, was owed $7MM for the rest of the season at the deadline, and the Brewers kicked in $2MM.

Given the reaction from Miller, clearly feeling something was wrong after he threw the pitch, and the postgame comments from Murphy, it would seem that the 34-year-old could be in jeopardy of missing the rest of the season.

After posting a 1.98 ERA with the Diamondbacks before the injury and trade, Miller struggled during his initial outings with the Brewers. Miller's ERA with the Brewers sits at 5.59, and it's possible those struggles were also a sign of something being off.

Injuries have been a theme of Miller's career, which included a brief stop with the Cubs in 2021. If you blinked, you likely missed Miller's run on the North Side, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits and 5 walks in only 2 innings of work.
