There's rain and then there's what blew through Chicagoland on Friday afternoon - a storm front that brought high winds, lightning and torrential downpours. Thankfully, the impact on the start time for the opener between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals was minimal, but we will start slightly later than scheduled.

First pitch is tentatively set for 3:15p CT - just a 10-minute delay from the initial start time. There's a lot of work that needs done at Wrigley Field in the meantime, though. The heavy rains have flooded the concourse in multiple areas, reportedly due to water coming back up through the drains of the iconic ballpark.

The region was hit hard overnight on Thursday with a major series of storms, so more heavy rain on top of it has made flash flooding an issue through parts of the city and surrounding suburbs. Hopefully, they can get things cleaned up ahead of this afternoon's first pitch.

Cubs and Cardinals set to kick off Fourth of July weekend at Wrigley Field

Friday marks the series opener of the holiday weekend series between the Cubs and their longstanding rivals, both of whom are currently in possession of a wild card berth in the NL playoff picture.

The Cubs hold the top spot in the wild card race, with St. Louis clinging onto the final one. Chicago just swept another October hopeful in the San Diego Padres and will look to keep things rolling against the Cardinals this weekend.

Left-hander David Peterson gets the ball for Chicago and will be opposed by right-hander Andre Pallante. You can watch the game on Marquee Sports Network and tune in via the radio with Hall of Famer Pat Hughes and former All-Star Ron Coomer on 670 WSCR.
