After being swept by the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this week and losing five straight games, the Chicago Cubs are shaking things up. Ascending infield prospect Pedro Ramirez is at Wrigley Field ahead of the Cubs' game against the Houston Astros on Friday, and considering he has a locker in the team's clubhouse, it would seem he's been promoted.

Editor's note: It turns out, it was less about providing a spark, and more about replacing the versatility lost with Matt Shaw. As the corresponding roster move, the Cubs placed Shaw on the 10-day IL with back tightness. Under that context, it makes sense why Pedro Ramirez got the call over Kevin Alcantara.

With the offense scuffling, now was a clear opportunity for the Cubs to make a change to their roster. Now, the Cubs aren't going to make any dramatic changes to their starting lineup. The reality is they need the likes of Ian Happ, Alex Bregman, Seiya Suzuki, and Pete Crow-Armstrong to return to form.

Cubs pull an early lever with Pedro Ramirez promotion

Having said that, the roster is also in need of a spark. While Kevin Alcantara would have one option, Ramirez is equally deserving. He's carrying a .942 OPS through his 196 plate appearances this season, and his positional versatility drew the attention of Craig Counsell during spring training.

With the graduations of Matt Shaw, Cade Horton, and Moises Ballesteros, Ramirez entered the 2026 season as the Cubs' No .2 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. During his ascension through the Cubs' farm system, the 22-year-old demonstrated the ability to play all over the infield. In recent weeks, he started to play in the outfield, suggesting that a promotion could be imminent.

Given that Ramirez impressed the Cubs during spring training, it was no surprise that he was on the team's radar to start the season. The positional versatility is likely what gave him the nod over Alcantara.

That's not to underscore the offensive success Ramirez has had with the I-Cubs this year. He carried a slash line of .312/.395/.547 before his promotion. He's also added power to his approach this season with nine home runs and 11 doubles.

If nothing else, Ramirez gives Counsell another option at DH and in the outfield. Not to mention, added infield depth. With Crow-Armstrong and Happ in offensive slumps, it wouldn't be a complete surprise to see Ramirez get a start or two over the weekend.

The reality of the situation is that Counsell and the Cubs could not have gone much longer without doing anything. The Cubs have looked lifeless for much of the last two weeks, and they can't afford to let things spiral more than they already have. The hope is that Ramirez's promotion is step toward the right direction.
