It's been no secret that the Chicago Cubs will be in the market for a starting pitcher ahead of the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline, and with the recent injury to Jameson Taillon, the case could even be made that the Cubs need two starting pitchers before the deadline. Regardless, what is clear is that the Cubs need a frontline starting pitcher.

The list of names connected to the Cubs ahead of the deadline has been well documented, and in a mailbag for The Athletic earlier this week, Jim Bowden had that reminder when asked about the Cubs' pursuits.

"Mitch Keller of the Pirates, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly of the Diamondbacks and Edward Cabrera and Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins make the most sense."

Familiar deadline targets resurface in ex-GM’s new list

Of the names mentioned by Bowden, Gallen hasn't been discussed to the same extent as the others. For rightful reasons, as Gallen has been bad with the Arizona Diamondbacks this season. In 19 starts this season, Gallen has an ERA of 5.15, and with an identical expected ERA and FIP of 4.75, the underlying metrics confirm that Gallen has been a bad pitcher this season.

Gallen isn't missing bats this season with the same frequency he had been throughout his career. Gallen has a career strikeout rate of 26.1 percent; however, this season, he is striking out just over 22 percent of the batters he has faced.

Gallen's strikeout regression this season can be linked to the loss in value of his knuckle curve pitch. A pitch that once had a value of 15.9 runs above average (the higher number is better for pitchers). This season, the pitch has a value of -2.6. Gallen has also lost value with his slider and cutter. Gallen needs fixing, but the Cubs' pitching infrastructure has proved excellent at that very thing. If the Cubs deem Gallen a quick fix, he could be a fallback option if they don't aim higher.

If the Cubs don't want to meet the asking price of the Marlins for Edward Cabrera or the Pittsburgh Pirates for Mitch Keller, Gallen would probably be the most affordable option on the market. Given his struggles this season and the fact that he is a free agent afterward, there likely wouldn't be a high asking price from the Diamondbacks should they choose to sell.
