Cubs Rumors: Team may extend Jed Hoyer far sooner than anyone expected

ESPN analyst Jesse Rogers offered an updated timeline on a Jed Hoyer extension that will surprise Cubs fans.

Jed Hoyer has had something of a rocky tenure as the Chicago Cubs' President of Baseball Operations since taking over for Theo Epstein following the 2020 season.

Since that time, the Cubs have failed to make the postseason in four consecutive campaigns, haven't won more than 83 games in any single season, and have generally been an afterthought in one of baseball's afterthought divisions.

However, 2025 has told a different story, with the Cubs marching out to a 37-22 start, good for the third-most wins in MLB as of June 3 (second-most in the National League). For the first time in Hoyer's tenure as the top dog in the front office, the Cubs are positioned to be buyers at the trade deadline.

Those good vibes don't just matter for the product on the field, though. According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, Hoyer and the organization could be looking to extend their partnership in short order.

Jed Hoyer, Cubs could reach contract extension by All-Star break

In a radio appearance, Rogers, who has been on the Cubs beat for years, didn't mince words about the likelihood of a Hoyer extension in the not-too-distant future:

"I think, I would not be surprised if Jed Hoyer is given a new contract by the All-Star break [July 14]. I think he's more likely to get it sooner rather than later, possibly before the trade deadline," Rogers told ESPN Chicago. "It's one of those things where it's like, if you're gonna impact our team for years to come, let's sign you up."

Rogers did acknowledge that it's possible the Cubs wait until after the season ends to finalize an extension — which he suggested would be between three and five years long — though he set the expectation that July 31 (the MLB trade deadline) would be the latest date a deal gets done.

Of course, Hoyer is currently in the final year of his original five-year contract that he signed when first replacing Epstein.

From the Cubs' perspective, signing Hoyer to an extension makes too much sense at this juncture, especially if he'll be given the green light to trade away prospects and future luxury tax space for some key players at this year's trade deadline. He certainly hasn't been flawless in his first go-round as the franchise's POBO, but the work he's done in restoring the team to contention since the Great Chicago Fire Sale of 2021 can't be overlooked.

It's also worth pointing out that he has a very strong working relationship with manager Craig Counsell, which shouldn't be discounted given how much the Cubs have valued the dugout-front office synergy since originally hiring Joe Maddon back in 2014.

Assuming Hoyer's extension gets done in short order, he'll have his own key extension to hammer out in the coming months with Kyle Tucker. One can only hope to get a similar report on the likelihood of that deal.
