With the graduations of Matt Shaw and Cade Horton to the Major League level, Chicago Cubs fans may not realize that Owen Caissie has taken over the label of being the top prospect in the Cubs' farm system. Once believed to be a lottery ticket included in the Cubs' salary dump of a trade with the San Diego Padres, Caissie's raw power has been undeniable. Caissie's power has been on display throughout the past month with the Iowa Cubs.

Caissie entered Friday with a slash line of .278/.386/.575/144 wRC+ with 19 home runs. Caissie's hot streak could not come at a better time for the Cubs. Dating back to last offseason, Caissie's name was pretty popular in trade talks. Caissie was believed to have been included in the trade that would have sent Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins to the Cubs before the deal was called off due to Luzardo's medicals. Ahead of the trade deadline this season, Caissie continues to be mentioned in trade talks.

Trade chatter around Owen Caissie reaching new level after breakout

For a Cubs team that is expected to be aggressive this season, defining 2025 and 2026 as their years of contention, trading Caissie would likely be the easiest path toward acquiring an impact talent at the deadline. For example, if Edward Cabrera truly is the answer for the Cubs' rotation need, Caissie would need to be included in that deal.

When discussing the idea of the Cubs trading Caissie at the trade deadline, Kyle Tucker's contract situation needs to be mentioned. It might not factor into the decision to include Caissie in a potential trade, but Tucker being a free agent after the season would give the Cubs' top prospect a clear path to the Major League level in 2026. Ideally, the Cubs would have had an extension in place with Tucker before the deadline, making it easier to part with Caissie in the right trade at the deadline.

In the meantime, Cubs fans can see Caissie play on Saturday night as he will be playing in the All-Star Futures Game on Saturday night.
