Cubs Rumors: Mets signaling early fire sale is what Jed Hoyer needed

There's no doubting the Chicago Cubs' status as a buyer ahead of the MLB trade deadline, and given they entered the weekend 12 games above .500 and atop the National League Wild Card, chances are the Cubs will be an aggressive buyer. Jed Hoyer and Co. have never been ones to jump the market, but an indication from the New York Mets should change that trend.

While the Mets weren't ready to declare themselves as sellers when they traded David Peterson to the Cubs last month, the message has change. Several MLB insiders have reported the Mets are ready to sell at the deadline, expressing a desire to move just about anyone on their roster not name Juan Soto and some of their younger, controllable talent.

In particular, SNY's Chelsea Jane reports the Mets that relievers Brooks Raley and A.J. Minter are likely to be dealt, and that starting pitchers Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes should generate a considerable amount of interest.

Another deal between the Cubs and Mets feels inevitable before the trade deadline

Even after the Pete Crow-Armstrong trade in 2021, the Mets and Cubs have been common trade partners over the years. Of course, considering the optics now surrounding the Crow-Armstrong trade, the Mets likely want to make sure they aren't the team being fleeced once again.

Early speculation clearly points to the Cubs being interested in Peralta, and the Mets could be aiming high in trade talks.

The Cubs certainly won't be giving up Josiah Hartshorn in any trade for a rental this season, and while Luke Weaver is under contract for the 2027 season, Hartshorn is likely off limits in trade talks.

Holmes is an intriguing trade fit for the Cubs. He's had success being converted into a starting pitcher upon signing with the Mets last season, but he's also returning from injury. Holmes suffered a fractured fibula earlier this season and is nearing a minor-league rehab assignment. He does have a player option for the 2027 season, assuming he returns to health and is effective, chances are he would elect free agency at the end of the year.

Regardless, given the sheer number of pitchers the Mets have to offer, and the overwhelming need the Cubs, it's hard to imagine these two teams not coming together on another trade before August 3. Given talks for Peterson trade lasted six weeks, there already is a familiarity between the two front offices.
