The Chicago Cubs appear motivated to add at least one more position player to their roster before their Opening Day series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Japan next month.
Of course, the Cubs remain among the favorites to sign All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman. While there have been conflicting reports on what level the Cubs' offer to Bregman has extended, it's clear that the front office has placed a high value on what the former Astros' World Series winner can bring to the starting lineup.
The Cubs' efforts to land Bregman seem to make the latest rumor curious if nothing else. Combined reporting from Ken Rosenthal and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic has indicated that if the Cubs are unable to sign Bregman, the team may quickly pivot to veteran infielder Justin Turner. The report also confirms that the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers, the two other teams interested in Bregman, also have some interest in Turner.
As for Bregman, Buster Olney reports that a decision could come soon and while the Astros have remained in the mix, a return to Houston does not seem likely.
Justin Turner would elevate the Cubs' bench
Looking beyond the idea that the Cubs' reported interest in Turner could be a form of leverage in their talks with Bregman, there is no question the veteran would provide some needed stability to the bench.
Along those lines, one thing to make clear is that, at this stage of his career, Turner is not a third baseman. The Cubs wouldn't be signing Turner with the idea of him being the starting third baseman before Matt Shaw takes over. Over the last two seasons, Turner has played less than 100 innings combined at third base. If the Cubs do sign Turner, he likely would be viewed as the primary backup to Michael Busch at first base and designated hitter depending on who is resting.
Having said all that, Turner would be a healthy addition to the Cubs' bench. Turner slashed .259/.354/.383/117wRC+ through 539 plate appearances. Not to mention, Turner would also provide the Cubs' bench with the power that they currently lack.
