With each passing day, it has become more likely that the Chicago Cubs will add another bat to their roster before the MLB trade deadline. The biggest question is whether the bat will be a starting option that can replace Matt Shaw at third base or an option that could potentially replace Vidal Bruján on the bench. That direction is yet to be determined, but it's clear a move for offense will happen, at least, that is how one insider put it.
In making his bold deadline prediction for the Cubs ahead of the deadline, The Athletic's Sahadev Sharma predicted the offense will receive an upgrade.
"But the Cubs are going to look at any way to get better. Right now, third base and the bench are not strengths, especially offensively. They’ll find a way to improve at least one of those areas, in turn lengthening an already deep and fearsome offense."
Insider gets blunt about one roster move Cubs will make
It's an important stretch of games for Shaw over the next week. If Shaw can turn the corner from his recent offensive regression, chances are the Cubs will look for bench options, adding a right-handed bat who would take Bruján's roster spot. If not, then it would seem clear that the Cubs would look for a starting option in place of Shaw.
Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks remains the top third baseman potentially available. In fact, the case can be made that even if Shaw shows life offensively before the deadline, the Cubs should still make a move for Suarez. Such a scenario would see Suarez inserted as the starting third baseman while Shaw serves in a utility role off the bench.
If not Suarez, the Cubs remain among the suitors mentioned for Ke'Bryan Hayes, but it feels like the move would be for an improvement to the bench. Hayes wouldn't be that type of addition. Willi Castro of the Minnesota Twins would check that box, giving the Cubs a potential insurance option at third, but also someone who can play both in the infield and the outfield.
