Based on Sandy Alcántara's recent starts, it would seem that we are at the point where he should be crossed off the list of potential targets for the Chicago Cubs ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Alcántara has a Cy Young Award to his name, but has been extremely bad this season. Alcántara's latest poor performance was giving up 6 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings of work against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.

On the season, Alcántara's ERA now sits at 7.22. Considering the reason behind the move for a frontline starting pitcher for the Cubs is to solidify their appearance as a World Series contender, adding Alcántara in the midst of struggles does not match that incentive. That said, in playing matchmaker for ESPN, Jeff Passan continues to push Alcantara as the perfect fit for the Cubs.

"Whether it's Alcántara or another starter, the Cubs are a good starter away from having one of the top teams in baseball. Their offense is undeniable. Their defense is magnificent. Their bullpen has been a pleasant surprise. Adding a playoff-caliber starter, even if it pushes Chicago past the $241 million luxury-tax threshold, would reward a team that has brought excitement back to the North Side of Chicago."

Alcántara would be the type of change-of-scenery pitcher referenced by Jed Hoyer during his recent interview with the The Athletic. The added benefit is that Alcántara is under control beyond this season, so the Cubs would have ample time to fix issues that have plagued the former Cy Young Award winner this season. However, again, it needs to be emphasized that any trade the Cubs make at the deadline needs to push them from being a division leader to a World Series contender.

Alcántara, in his current form, would not check that box for the Cubs. Which is why Passan leaves the door open that it could be another playoff-caliber pitcher who could be the perfect match for the Cubs.

At the very least, the asking price the Marlins once had for Alcántara is not going to be at the deadline, given the struggles that have been had this season. In that case, the Marlins may hold onto Alcántara for a potential trade during the offseason.
