Over the course of the past month, the Chicago Cubs have raised the floor of production for their bench with the additions of Jon Berti and Vidal Bruján.

The Cubs don't appear to be done adding position players to their Major League roster either.

Of course, in recent weeks, the Cubs have found themselves directly involved in the sweepstakes for All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman. Initially, it seemed that the Cubs' rumored interest in Bregman was a leverage play as Scott Boras tried to get a better offer from the Houston Astros or Detroit Tigers. In the days since, however, it's become clear that the Cubs are looking for ways to add Bregman to their starting lineup.

The latest from Bruce Levine of 670 The Score:

"A deal similar to the one that outfielder Cody Bellinger signed with Chicago ahead of the 2024 season would be the blueprint for a potential union between Bregman and the Cubs. Bellinger signed a three-year, $80-million deal with the Cubs that included player opt-outs after each of the first two seasons.," Levine reports.

Many Cubs fans have been quick to question the roster fit and financial fit of the Cubs adding Bregman. The truth is there is no need to overthink either.

For the roster fit, it goes back to the adage of Bregman being a good player and if the opportunity arises for the Cubs to add a good player, they need to look into that possibility. Sure, Bregman's arrival does mean the Matt Shaw experience wouldn't start right away. But, if the Cubs enter the 2025 season with Bregman as their third baseman and Shaw serving in a starter-adjacent role while playing multiple positions, there is little to question about that roster construction.

From a financial fit, the Cubs can sign Bregman to a similar deal Bellinger signed last Spring while still having the ability to move the third baseman next offseason on the off chance he were to opt back into his deal.

Even if the Cubs don't sign Alex Bregman, expect another bench addition.

Despite the Cubs wanting Bregman, it still remains more likely than not the he winds up with the Astros or Tigers. If that happens, the Cubs won't forego adding to the position player side of their roster. Levine also reports that the Cubs are also expressing interest in free-agent infielder Jose Iglesias.
