Among the top rental pitchers the Chicago Cubs could acquire at the MLB trade is Seth Lugo of the Kansas City Royals. Lugo isn't a traditional rental, considering he does hold a $15MM player option for the 2026 season. Assuming health, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Lugo will test free agency, given the success he has had over the last two seasons.
That said, the $15MM player option can be viewed as a burden, considering a significant injury during the closing months of the season would make that a mere formality, and the Cubs would take a significant financial hit to the money they have available this offseason. Yes, we know that shouldn't be a factor for a team like the Cubs, but here we are.
The Cubs have been connected to Lugo as recently as this week, but it seems that Kansas City is having some second thoughts about moving the veteran pitcher.
Seth Lugo is an intriguing name in the trade market, but rival evaluators don't sense the Royals are especially motivated to make a deal. Kansas City could also use this moment to explore an extension with Lugo, to keep their deep well of starting pitching intact.

Cubs may have just lost out on one of their top pitching trade targets
Of course, the Royals remain in the mix for a Wild-Card spot in the American League, so there is no guarantee that they will be sellers at the deadline next Thursday. Even if they were, it seemed that the Royals were more interested in maintaining their good relationship with Lugo as opposed to trading him.
If the Cubs go the rental route, chances are Lugo would be near the top of the list of options. The other two are Merrill Kelly of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Dylan Cease of the San Diego Padres. In Cease's case, however, it remains difficult to map out how a trade between the Cubs and Padres would work, considering each are contenders in the National League. The Diamondbacks are expected to move Kelly and Zac Gallen before the deadline next Thursday.
Lugo, given the current options that exist and the deadline being less than a week away, may no longer be a top option for the Cubs. However, if circumstances change between now and Thursday, Lugo remains an ideal fallback option.
