The Chicago Cubs have made a roster move involving the San Francisco Giants, just not the one that is tied to a potential Nico Hoerner trade. Instead, the Cubs have claimed outfielder Justin Dean off waivers from the National League West Contender.

The Cubs' 40-man roster now is at 38, but it's important to note that the team hasn't announced the signing of Alex Bregman. Bregman's arrival will leave only one open spot, signaling that the end of the offseason may be near.

Dodgers' World Series hero offers some much-need outfield depth for the Chicago Cubs.

Dean truly was an unsung hero for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. The 29-year-old outfielder made a heads-up play in Game 6 of the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Instead of trying to make a play on a ball that wedged in the outfield wall, he put his hands in the air, signaling that a play couldn't be made and preventing Toronto from scoring on the double hit by Addison Barger.

Despite his heroics, Dean was designated for assignment by the Dodgers shortly after the offseason started and was claimed by the San Francisco Giants. In a housecleaning measure, the Giants designated Dean for assignment for last week.

Losing Kyle Tucker in free agency and trading Owen Caissie to the Miami Marlins for Edward Cabrera, the Cubs needed some outfield depth. A glove-first outfielder with speed, Dean will likely compete with Kevin Alcantara for a spot on the Cubs bench. Dean does have three minor-league options, so the Cubs can stash him at Triple-A Iowa.

Despite his efforts in the World Series, Dean only has two plate appearances to his name. He has yet to collect his first career hit, so that would be something to look for if he does make the Opening Day roster.

Setting Dean to the side, the Cubs and Giants could soon be trade partners. San Francisco is eager to find an upgrade at second base and is engaged with the Cubs on a potential trade of Hoerner.

Cubs fans have already expressed their frustration over the potential move, and even for a front office that takes the emotions out of their decision-making, trading the homegrown second baseman feels like they would be destroying the goodwill established after the team signed Bregman.
