The Chicago Cubs are reportedly finalizing a trade for Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, but as they wait for the paperwork to be completed, they have claimed a pitcher off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. ESPN's Jesse Rogers reports that the Cubs have claimed Ryan Rolison from their crosstown rival
Of course, it's not the news that Cubs fans have been anxiously waiting for, but it checks off the box of the team adding more pitching depth to the organization. Rolison does have a minor-league option remaining and seems likely to start the 2026 season with the Iowa Cubs.
As Cubs work to finalize Edward Cabrera trade, they add more pitching depth with Ryan Rolison.
A former first-round pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2022, Rolison made his debut this past season. He posted a 7.02 ERA in 31 appearances, and his move to the Cubs marks the third transaction he's been involved in this winter. His offseason started by being traded to the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations, and he was ultimately claimed off waivers by the White Sox in December. Rolison now finds his way to the other side of town.
And, while you're here, we know that you want to know the latest with Cabrera.
By most accounts, the trade between the Cubs and Marlins has reached the final stages. There are still several housecleaning items that have to be checked off before the move gets announced. That includes informing all the players involved in the deal, as well as Cabrera passing a physical.
As of now, multiple reports confirm that Owen Caissie will be a part of the package going from the Cubs to the Marlins once the trade is completed.
Last offseason, the Cubs and Marlins agreed to a trade that included Caissie, but it was nixed after Chicago scoffed at Jesús Luzardo's medicals. It's worth pointing out that Cabrera worked through an elbow injury to close out the 2025 season, and given the magnitude of this trade, the Cubs need to make sure that their medical evaluations are thorough.
As of now, there's no reason to believe the deal will fall through, but Cubs fans likely won't relax until they get the notification from Jeff Passan.
