The Chicago Cubs' farm system will be front and center in July, and not just because of the likely trades that are coming involving a number of the team's prospects. Two of the club's top talents - Owen Caissie and Jaxon Wiggins - will take part in the 2025 Futures Game in Atlanta as part of the All-Star Game festivities.

Most fans are more familiar with Caissie, the team's second-round pick back in 2020. MLB Pipeline currently pegs the outfielder as the organization's top-ranked prospect after both Matt Shaw and Cade Horton graduated from the list this year. This marks his second consecutive Futures Game appearance.

This year at Triple-A Iowa, Caissie carries an .877 in 65 games, with just under half of his hits going for extra bases (18 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs). He's knocking on the door of the big leagues, but with no clear path to everyday at-bats with Chicago's loaded outfield picture, he could wind up being a major trade chip for Jed Hoyer ahead of the deadline.

Cubs prospect Jaxon Wiggins has trade chip written all over him of late

As for Wiggins, he's been in the rumor mill of late after being scratched from not one, but two scheduled appearances at Double-A. One of Chicago's top-ranked pitching prospects, Wiggins has quickly ascended the rankings boards since being drafted in the second round in 2023 out of Arkansas and has been lights-out this year, splitting the season between High-A and Double-A.

In a dozen starts and one relief appearance, Wiggins carries a 2.09 ERA and 0.994 WHIP to go along with 11 punchouts per nine. The 23-year-old is now, more or less, dead-even with Brandon Birdsell on the organization's pitching prospects leaderboard, despite having never thrown a pitch at Triple-A. This year, in particular, Wiggins has delivered some long-sought mechanical consistency - and it's made a tremendous difference in the results.

We've seen a number of the organization's best at the Futures Game in recent years. Last year, Caissie joined Matt Shaw and Moises Ballesteros in Arlington. In 2023, Pete Crow-Armstrong and BJ Murray represented Chicago in the event and in 2022, PCA was the team's lone representative.

The 2025 Futures Game is scheduled for 4p ET on Saturday, July 12 in Atlanta. The MLB Home Run Derby is set for Monday, July 14 and the Midsummer Classic is on Tuesday, July 15.
