While the Chicago Cubs have yet to reveal their Opening Day starting pitcher, the Washington Nationals may have tabbed one of their former first-round picks to get the nod against the Cubs. There has yet to be an official announcement, but the Nationals will reportedly start Cade Cavalli against the Cubs on Opening Day.

If so, it would be just his 12th career appearance, making him one of only three pitchers since 1999 to start Opening Day with 11 or fewer prior MLB games pitched.

Drafted in the first round of the 2020 draft, injuries have defined Cavalli's ascension through the Nationals' farm system. He made a spot appearance for the Nationals at the major league level in 2022, but an elbow injury the following year in spring training wiped out his entire season. In 2024, he dealt with illness and arm fatigue that limited him to only three minor-league appearances.
The 27-year-old finally got an extended runway in the Nationals' rotation last year, making 10 starts. He posted an ERA of 4.25 in just under 49 innings pitched. Finally healthy, and after the Nationals traded MacKenzie Gore earlier this offseason, Cavalli should have the opportunity to cement his status in the team's rotation this season.
Assuming the Nationals tab Cavalli as their Opening Day starter, it is likely due to his impressive showing during spring training. He hasn't given up a run in six innings of work while striking out 7 of the 20 batters he faced.
Nationals reportedly name their Opening Day starting pitcher while the Cubs have yet to announce theirs.
Outside of Cavalli, the only other legitimate option would have been Miles Mikolas, who Washington may be looking to hide against the Cubs. The Nationals recently signed former Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Zack Littell, but he may not be ready in time for Opening Day.
Craig Counsell is expected to name the Cubs' Opening Day starting pitcher in the coming days. With Justin Steele opening the season on the IL and Shota Imanaga's regression at the end of last year, the decision is not exactly clear.
Cade Horton was ascending toward being the ace of the rotation at the end of the 2025 season, and that could be why he gets the nod. However, it's also possible that Counsell wants to reward Matthew Boyd after an All-Star campaign last year. Of course, Edward Cabrera could also be in consideration.
