The Chicago Cubs are in the market for a starting pitcher ahead of the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline, and their search could bring them back to a familiar trade target. Last offseason, Yusei Kikuchi was among the early group of free-agent starting pitchers tied to the Cubs. Kikuchi inked a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels worth $63MM. It was a deal that, at the time, seemed too rich for what the Cubs were looking for, but now, at the deadline, they could be looking for a do-over.

Matthew Trueblood of North Side Baseball reports that the Angels are one of the teams that the Cubs have in contact with regarding a potential trade, noting that Kikuchi is among the Angels' starting pitchers the Cubs have their eyes on. Trueblood also has the Cubs aiming higher, with José Soriano also being an Angels pitcher of interest to the Cubs.

A quick look through Kikuchi's numbers and the assumption is he is having a good season with the Angels. To be fair, he is posting a 3.05 ERA through his first 15 starts this season. That said, his metrics are down across the board, including a significant drop in his strikeout rate and a steady increase in his walk rate. Kikucki's xERA also sits at 4.65 with a 4.20 ERA. The Angels haven't unlocked a new version of Kikucki as the veteran has just been extremely lucky this season.

Familiar name is back on Cubs’ radar as trade deadline looms

That said, Kikuchi was excellent at the end of the 2024 season with the Houston Astros, posting a 2.70 ERA in 10 starts. Unlike his time with the Angels, Kikucki's metrics with the Astros suggest he was every bit as good as his ERA indicated. That is likely where the Cubs' interest in Kikuchi is rooted, and even with him being under contract for 2026 and 2027, the money wouldn't handcuff them financially.

In a seller's market, the Cubs may shy away from the prospect cost that it would take to trade for a true top-of-the-rotation arm such as Sandy Alcantara. If that happens, a pitcher like Kikuchi could be an intriguing fit.
