It's Hall of Fame Day at Wrigley Field on Sunday, with the Chicago Cubs set to honor this year's inductees, Sammy Sosa and Derrek Lee. On the field, Craig Counsell's club will look to bounce back from a quiet offensive showing in Saturday's 2-1 loss - but it appears they'll be operating at well below full strength.
The Cubs continue to take Kyle Tucker's calf injury day by day and now, Pete Crow-Armstrong's status is uncertain after the All-Star center fielder fouled a ball off his knee.
“It's new pain,” Crow-Armstrong said after the game. “There's definitely [stuff] that's hurt worse, but this hurts. And the legs are just funny. That's kind of how I help the cause on a daily basis, is with my legs. It was a good stinger, for sure.”
The timing is unfortunate, to say the least. Crow-Armstrong had just returned from multiple days off designed to help him reset both physically and mentally, tallying a pair of hits in Friday's win, and doubled early on Saturday. The Cubs need his bat and it looked like they were about to get it back at a perfect time, but now, we hit pause and wait to see how he feels on Sunday.
Kyle Tucker taking things one day at a time with his calf injury
Tucker hasn't played since Tuesday as he recovers from a left calf injury, but he continues to progress and the team isn't planning on placing him on the injured list.
“That's what we're dealing with is we think we have time to let this heal without putting him on the injured list,” Counsell said. “We think he'll be ready before what an injured list [stint] would cost him. And we also, with having the extra player in September, feel like we're not playing short, really. Don't feel like, from a roster perspective, it hurts us at all.
The Cubs are being cautious with their superstar outfielder, but the lack of an IL stint isn't going to sit well with at least some of the fanbase given how the team's handling of his finger injury this summer spiraled out of control as he went into a career-worst tailspin before finally righting the ship.
Counsell said Tucker showed improvement Saturday so, even though he's not expected to start in the series finale, hopefully the Cubs can get his hot bat back in the lineup this week in Atlanta.
