Placed on waivers as part of the Chicago Cubs' end-of-season 40-man clean-up, right-hander Jimmy Herget is on the move again. This time, the Colorado Rockies placed a waiver claim on the former sixth-round pick out of the University of South Florida, ending his brief time with the Cubs organization.
Chicago picked him up on waivers from the Atlanta Braves back in September, but he never appeared in a big-league game with the club. The 31-year-old turned in four scoreless appearances with Triple-A Iowa and finished the year with a 2.88 ERA in the minors, splitting time with a trio of organizations in the process.
It's been an eventful career for Herget, who will join his sixth MLB organization next spring. Initially drafted by the Reds back in 2015, he's spent time with Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Texas, Atlanta and Chicago over the last decade.
He is out of minor-league options, making the decision to move on a logical one for the Cubs. He'll head to Colorado and look to earn job out of camp with a Rockies team that ranked dead-last in bullpen ERA last season.
The Cubs made their first waiver claim of the offseason last week, bringing back familiar face Rob Zastryzny from the Brewers. The left-hander split the 2024 campaign between Triple-A and the bigs, where he made six relief appearances and a trio of starts, working to a 1.17 ERA. More than anything, he gives Chicago more left-handed relief depth, a major area of need heading into the offseason.
