The Chicago Cubs desperately need to turn the page and get off on the right foot in June. Last month, the team suffered a miserable 10-game losing streak and found a way to spoil the 21-12 record they held in the early-going. Although Chicago somehow only finished with a 13-16 record, it's a month that everyone would like to forget. And luckily, the Cubs' upcoming schedule should help them get back on track.
In the first half of June, the Cubs will play 15 games against opponents with records below the .500 mark as of June 1. These include nine games at Wrigley Field against the Athletics (28-31), San Francisco Giants (23-37) and Colorado Rockies (23-38), with a road trip to Colorado and San Francisco in between. This is a real chance for the team to collect some wins and jump back into the National League Central race.
Even with the Milwaukee Brewers surging into first place after a 19-7 May, the Cubs entered Tuesday's opener against the A's only 5 1/2 games back in the division with plenty of baseball left to play. The two teams have another three-game set starting on June 26 in Milwaukee, and the Cubs need to be within a game or two of first place when that series comes around.
Why it's still way too early to hit the panic button on the 2026 Cubs
The easy schedule is reason enough for optimism, but the Cubs have some other things going for them right now. Ben Brown has been carrying the starting rotation and pitching like an ace in the first half. Edward Cabrera is on the verge of his return from a blister issue, which undoubtedly means Joran Wicks will be off the active roster and hopefully back in Triple-A to figure out his issues. Matthew Boyd will follow soon after and give the rotation a much-needed boost.
And the lineup is getting some much-needed production from guys like Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong, helping mask the struggles of others.
May was a certified disaster, but the beautiful thing about baseball is that the calendar always flips. Armed with an incredibly soft June schedule, some elite Ben Brown outings, and vital reinforcements on the horizon, Craig Counsell’s squad is perfectly positioned to erase the bad vibes
