Craig Counsell admittedly wasn't aware that Jaxon Wiggins moved to the bullpen for Triple-A Iowa after Wiggins was used as a reliever during the Minor League Field of Dreams game, but it's likely on his radar now, considering the success the 24-year-old has had in his new role.
Overall, the Cubs likely hope that Wiggins does pan out as a starting pitcher, but for the rest of the 2026 season, the shift to the bullpen made sense. It's an easier way for the Cubs to manage in his innings, and gives the front office data in the event that the pitching prospect is under consideration for a spot in the big-league bullpen in September.
Wiggins appearance out of the bullpen during the Field of Dreams games wasn't just a one-off. In fact, he's remained in the bullpen and he's looked to be the dominant version of himself that the Cubs have been waiting for.
Cubs see Jaxon Wiggins role change unlock what they've been begging for
Wiggins has tossed three scoreless innings across three appearances, striking out five of the 12 hitters he's faced. He's walked three, but he also hasn't allowed a hit since his move to the bullpen. One thing to note, and the very reason why Wiggins likely won't be considered for a spot on the postseason roster, is that he has yet to pitch on back-to-back days. There were five days between his first two bullpen appearances, and three days between his second and third outings.
In October, the Cubs likely won't roster a pitcher in the bullpen who takes multiple days to recover between appearances. It's why for as great as Shelby Miller has looked during his minor-league rehab assignment, he still has some ways to go before becoming a legitimate option. Plus, as great as Miller could be for the Cubs, they don't have to rush his recovery, considering he's under contract for the 2027 season.
That isn't exactly the case for Wiggins, considering he is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this offseason. Whether or not that draft actually happens in December remains to be seen. That said, the Cubs will need to have to add him to the 40-man roster before December 1.
Assuming Wiggins continues to be dominant out of the bullpen for the I-Cubs, the decision in September is simple. Add the pitching prospect to the 40-man roster and make him a September call-up.
