The Chicago Cubs took a gamble when they signed Hunter Harvey to a one-year deal during the offseason, considering the checkered injury history that has plagued Harvey's career. Harvey was limited to just 12 appearances with the Kansas City Royals last season, and he may not top that mark with the Cubs.

After just four appearances with the Cubs this season, Harvey landed on the IL with a triceps injury. As he was set to resume his throwing program earlier this season, there was a setback. Now, the indication is that Harvey may not pitch again for the Cubs this season.

Cubs threw money down the drain with Hunter Harvey signing

Speaking with reporters, including The Athletic's Patrick Mooney, Craig Counsell indicated that time is running out on Harvey making a return for the Cubs. The idea hasn't been completely ruled out, but it would seem there's a narrow path for Harvey's recovery.

Given the state of the Cubs' bullpen, it's fair to once again point out the Cubs spent $6 million Harvey. Injuries certainly can't be predicted, but in Harvey's case, it should have been a part of the conversation.

Cubs expect Ben Brown to return this season, but not as a starting pitcher

Despite uncertainty surrounding his timeline, Ben Brown is expected to pitch again for the Cubs this season. Brown has resumed baseball activity, and the expectation is that his throwing program will start back up after the All-Star break.

Similar to Justin Steele, the calendar may not be on Brown's side to return as a starting pitcher this season. The Cubs haven't shut that door, as they have with Steele, but it would seem more likely that Brown is pitching out of the bullpen upon his initial return.

Edward Cabrera resumes throwing program, bullpen session nearing after All-Star break

Edward Cabrera is ahead of Brown in terms of his recovery. Cabrera has resumed his throwing program, and the expectation is that he will throw bullpen session before the end of July. Assuming there's no further setbacks, a return during August feels like the best-case scenario for Cabrera.

If there's a silver lining for the Cubs and Cabrera, it's that he's expected to have enough time to ramp-up and return to the rotation. Of course, then, the question becomes what version of Cabrera will the Cubs have moving forward.
