Cubs fans won't be surprised to see Willson Contreras fighting with Red Sox fans

At every stop along the way of his 11-year MLB career, Willson Contreras has made his share of headlines. That was the case when he was an up-and-coming backstop with the Chicago Cubs, when he jumped ship to the rival St. Louis Cardinals and buried his former team in public comments, only to land in multiple controversies, and that trend has continued as a member of the Boston Red Sox.

Red Sox Nation, for the most part, has put up with the showdowns with pitchers and pointed comments because, well, he's putting up big-time numbers. Contreras has been an offensive juggernaut for Boston this year, having already set a new career-high in home runs while rapidly approaching his personal-best for runs batted in.

But after not running out a ground ball for the second time in a month, a handful of Red Sox fans let Contreras hear it, leading to the four-time All-Star getting into a verbal altercation. He's been working through a hamstring issue and reportedly has Chad Tracy's OK to pick his spots on the basepaths, but Red Sox fans don't want to hear it.

“I won’t change my mind about Boston or the fans,” Contreras said. “I think it’s the best place to play baseball. If I was 100%, they wouldn’t boo me because I was gonna hustle down the line. But that won’t change my perspective about being a Red Sox and being in Boston. I get goosebumps every time I think about Boston and I’m in the right place.”

Contreras reportedly had no interest in waiving his no-trade clause and hopes to stick around in Boston for years to come. His fiery style of play and intense emotions have endeared him to the fanbase in much the same way it did during his time on the North Side.

With Willson Contreras, you have to accept the good with the bad

This is true with any player, but with Contreras specifically, you just know he's going to have these blow-ups and incidents. But when he's producing at such a high level, it's easy to look past those moments and keep your eyes on the prize.

He's since walked back some of those comments, but he definitely burned bridges when he joined the Cardinals after talking smack in the press about the Cubs organization. But, for many, he'll always hold a special place. You have to give him this, though. He stays true to who he is - and is always ready to stick up for himself and his team, regardless of what anybody says.
