Coming off a win in the weekend series over the Cincinnati Reds, the vibes surrounding the Chicago Cubs were pretty immaculate heading into Memorial Day at Wrigley Field.
And it's not just the fanbase that's vibing with Craig Counsell's club right now. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter has the Cubs as the best team in the National League in his latest MLB power rankings, with Chicago leapfrogging the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.
The Cubs jumped from #5 to #2, trailing only the New York Yankees - coincidentally, the only team in baseball with a better run differential entering action Monday. Here's what Reuter had to say about the North Siders' recent play.
"Aside from a rocky week in early May where they suffered consecutive series losses to the Giants and Mets, the Cubs have been one of the most consistent teams in baseball, and they went a combined 9-3 against the Marlins, White Sox, Marlins again and Reds over the last two weeks. After surviving an absolute gauntlet in April, they are now taking full advantage of a more favorable schedule. PCA for MVP?"
Cubs' bats continue to hang crooked numbers on opponents
The Cubs have ridden MVP-level production from star center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and unsung hero Seiya Suzuki led all of Major League Baseball in runs batted in after clubbing a game-winning three-run home run on Sunday in Cincinnati. Kyle Tucker continues to do Kyle Tucker-like things, with a team-leading 160 OPS+ on the year.
Chicago's starting rotation is the biggest question mark, especially with Ben Brown struggling of late and Shota Imanaga not due back until 'well into June' - that's not to mention the loss of Justin Steele for the rest of the season. Cubs starters entered Monday ranked 20th in baseball with a 4.11 ERA.
The offense continues to carry this team, and that seems unlikely to change anytime soon. If the bats can keep rolling and the front office adds to the pitching staff ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, this is a team that could go deep into October - and folks around the league are starting to take notice of that fact.
